Mario's Pizza

Tuesday, August 24 marked the inaugural night of a 13 week pizza extravaganza. Throughout the next 13 weeks, a very special group of people (not exclusive) will be on a mission to discover the greatest pizza in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Why? Mainly to entertain ourselves, but also to be able to honestly say we have eaten at the best pizza place in Tulsa and we would like to recommend it to you with a clear conscience, knowing that we do indeed know the best restaurant. Obviously, this mission will make the world a better place, and hopefully our figures. Is this an easy task? Not at all, but we are willing to take on this task to better our society. The good news is that we will not be visiting any chain pizza places. These are Tulsa's very own, original, possibly sketchy, but hopefully tasty pizza creations.

Our first stop on our quest to find the perfect pizza began at Mario's Pizza at 51st and Harvard. We were very pleased with our Mario's New York Style pizza. Being that this is our first stop we had to set some ground rules as to how we will rank each pizza stop. We came up with three scales: our pizza (flavor, quality, deliciousness, texture, etc.), value (the price of the pizza along with the flavor), and overall atmosphere (how well did they decorate?). For the pizza scale, we decided a 1-10 (whole numbers only please) scale was in order, because this is obviously the most important quality. The atmosphere and value are set on a 1-5 scale, because it just makes things easier.

Now back to our Marios experience.  If we were ranking on a scale of 1-10 our quality of company, it would be a 5, due to a certain someone whose name starts with a C and ends with hristian bringing our average down. Ok ok, but seriously, our real rankings, drum roll please, are the following: Pizza=6.625. Obviously, our group had some mixed feelings on just how good this pizza was. It all comes down to your preferences on New York Style Pizza. Let me tell you this is some good pizza. Our rankings varied from 6-8, which I would say is pretty good. Value=4.875, but we could all agree that you are getting a bang for you buck. This is some pretty solid pizza for only $2 a slice +$.25 per topping. Great Deal. Atmosphere=2.75, as the writers of this blog, we feel as though atmosphere should've ranked a little higher. Unfortunately, males and females tend to have different feelings on what a unassuming pizza place should look like. Eh, no bitter feelings.

Below is the documentation of a night well spent.

View of the kitchen right as you walk in - I think I caught them off guard

the goods

view of the restaurant, plus a terrible shot of Amy Ann, the ghost, but it's all for the good of the blog (Rachel you stink for changing this and thinking I wouldn't notice....we are both blog stalkers...what does Amy Ann the ghost even mean?? are you trying to tell mean I need a tan? I might 1. agree and 2. be offended)

Betsy and Christian eagerly anticipating what awaits them

partial group shot

classic combo

meatball, onion, and pineapple - an odd combination but still made for a tasty piece of pie

the "Sicilian" not as good as the New York style

the weekly reveal...what will it be?!

Tune in next week to find out what is next in the line up in the quest for excellence. Seriously, please join us. Please. We would like to up our average on company rankings.

  1. The Sicilian looks like something fell on it, but the others looked & sounded great!

  2. Mario's is the perfect combination of serious and potentially creative pizza, a chill atmosphere, and a value that won't max out your credit card.
-Pizza Scale: Due to the availability of oregano and garlic as condiments for your tasting enjoyment, Mario's pushes the scale all the way to a 9 out of 10. clearly there's just not much better quality out there.
-Environment: While Mario's conveys an "I don't take life too seriously" attitude, it also conveys the "you might want to check our health inspection records" image. Just keep your eyes on the product (the pizza) and you should be fine. 2 out of 5.
-Value: There just isn't a better value out there. $2 per slice? Seriously? They have obviously not adjusted for inflation since 1982. 5 out of 5.
